Most people make at least one New Year’s resolution before the clock strikes midnight, but sticking to it for 365 days can be a daunting task. Check out these 4 tips on how to keep those resolutions and achieve your goals!
1. Be Realistic
You don’t want to sell yourself short, but “small goals = success”. Achieving goals can be much easier when they are specific and measurable, rather than general and broad. Want to lose weight? Instead of focusing on an overall number, set weekly or monthly goals. Want to read more? Start with a book per month instead of creating a multi-page list. And create a plan!
2. Enlist Support
Tell your friends and family about your goals so they can help you measure and achieve them. They likely have resolutions too, and a support group will help you all stick to them together.
3. Remember, No One is Perfect
Ok. So you ate that last piece of chocolate cake during your 10 PM fridge raid. No big deal – no one is perfect! Don’t beat yourself up. Just move on! Sometimes a little cake is necessary!
4. Slow and Steady Wins the Race
Don’t try to overhaul your whole lifestyle at once. Work on changing one behavior at a time. If your resolution is to drop sugar completely, then it’s probably not a good idea to stop eating chocolate cold turkey. Try cutting out soft drinks first, then work up from there. It’s a marathon, not a sprint!
Just remember to have fun and get creative with your resolutions! Think of something outside the box, like scheduling time just to be bored. Or, like Melinda Gates, choose a single word to guide you through the year. Melinda’s 2016 word was “gentle“. What will your resolution be?
