Having just been through the experience of moving myself, and more appropriately, downsizing, I do have a little bit of advice for all of you thinking of moving homes. The most important thing you can work on before you tackle the job is creating the goals you hope to accomplish, putting the time to accomplish them on your calendar and setting your mindset.
My husband and I wrote down what we hoped to accomplish by selling the home in which we raised our children. For us, we had over 20 years worth of clutter that needed to be looked at and examined on whether or not we wanted to keep it. If we hadn’t used it in the last couple of years, it probably ended up in the dumpster. To make moving easier, have dumpster delivered to your home. They are as inexpensive as $225 for two weeks.
Our goal was to remove as much clutter from our lives as possible, and simplify. We spent a lot of time making lists in each room as to what we would keep, donate or throw away. It’s pretty amazing what you can accumulate in 28 years of marriage.
The next part that is super important is to move you towards your goal of downsizing is to make time on your calendar to accomplish all of the above activities. And then you have to actually follow through! Note, this is the hardest part…
And finally, the mindset thing is equally important. Once both of you have set your mind to the fact that it is time to move on, make that your one thing. Are most of the activities you’re doing together in your free time moving you towards this goal? If they are not, you may need to re-examine whether or not it is your one thing. And that’s okay, because both of you will know when it IS the right time to make the move.
Then, just get started! Once you get that house cleaned out, call me and we will work through what you need to do to get the most money and sell in the least amount of time. We invested some money for renovations into our home after we cleaned it out, and it made a huge difference in how quickly we sold it and in getting the price we had hoped for when we listed. (I have a guy for that – call me for details!!)
Just remember: “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” And if you need some encouragement, call me. I’ll bring the wine, laughter and trash bags! YOU CAN DO IT!
